What happens when international journalists walk into a hospital? We found out this afternoon at Ruijin Hospital Hainan.

This isn't just any hospital. Located in Boao Lecheng Pilot Zone, Ruijin Hainan operates under rules that don't exist elsewhere in China—internationally approved drugs and devices can be used here years before they're available nationwide.

By the numbers (Source: Xinhua News, Hainan Daily):
212 internationally approved drugs and devices introduced
147 of them used in China for the first time right here
Over 40,000 patients treated from across the country
52 real-world studies launched

Two stories that stopped journalists mid-step:
A 3-year-old with achondroplasia from Jiangsu—a rare condition with no effective treatment in China. In 2022, after Vosoritide (the world's only drug for this condition) launched in the EU, Ruijin brought it in through Lecheng's policies. This child became China's first to receive it. By November 2024, 27 children with the same condition were treated on a single day at Ruijin Hainan . Today, about 70 children have benefited—no more traveling abroad for life-saving medicine.

A 7-year-old with Crohn's disease from Hunan. China couldn't provide the special nutrition she needed. In February 2025, Ruijin introduced Modulen—the world's only such food for children over 5—and issued China's first prescription . After 12 weeks of treatment, her symptoms improved, weight came back, and she returned to school .

Journalists' questions kept coming:
"How does this green channel actually work on the ground?"
"What's real-world data research really mean for patients?"
"Why do global pharma companies keep showing up here?"
No dramatic voiceovers. No polished taglines. Just patients who couldn't wait, and a hospital that didn't make them.
